#TwoForTuesday: Two Books Written by Women of Color

As is obvious from the title, today’s #TwoForTuesday blog post prompt is Two Books Written by Women of Color. Thank you, Rae of Rae’s Reads and Reviews blog for supplying the prompt.

I’ve chosen two books that have nothing in common except they’re both written by women of color.

Left to Tell:  Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust, by Immaculee Ilibagiza

Of the nearly one million Rwandans who lost their lives in the 1994 genocide in that country, college student Immaculee Ilibagiza lost most of her relatives. This book is her telling of the story.  Indeed, she believes she was “left to tell.”

Ms. Ilibagiza and seven other women hid in the bathroom in a local pastor’s house for 91 days during the violence. During her ordeal she was able to come to understand the true meaning of forgiveness. Afterwards, she sought out and forgave her family’s killers.

This is an extraordinary story!

Jackie Tales:  The Magic of Creating Stories and the Art of Telling Them, by Jackie Torrence

Switching gears completely from Left to Tell, the other book I’m highlighting today is Jackie Tales:  The Magic of Creating Stories and the Art of Telling Them, by Jackie Torrence. Ms. Torrence was a reference librarian in High Point, North Carolina and a master storyteller.

This delightful book not only includes 16 folk tales but also has Ms. Torrence’s stage directions so the reader can learn many techniques of good storytelling.

With an introduction by Ossie Davis and a host of up-close photographs illustrating the wonderfully expressive face of Ms. Torrence, this book is a real gem for anyone aspiring to be a writer, a storyteller, or an entertaining reader to children.

Ms. Torrence had quite a gift and the storytelling world will never forget her. I found myself laughing out loud as I read each of the stories in this book. Bravo!

  2. I can’t wait to see what you wrote about this prompt. We’ve had company since noon yesterday, so I’ve had very little computer time. I’m glad you found the two books I blogged about today to be interesting. Left to Tell is available from Amazon and there are used copies of Jackie Tales available through http://www.abe.com (The Advanced Book Exchange is one of my favorite websites for inexpensive books and hard-to-find books.)

    I need to catch up on your blog posts now that I know the “like” button will work if I go through Chrome instead of Firefox. Old habits are hard to break!

  3. Hi again. that’s interesting about Firefox vs. Chrome. I hadn’t heard of that issue before, though I stopped using Firefox a few years ago for a similar reason. Don’t understand it though. I’m not doing the prompts this month; just a matter of time and ability to commit. But I’ll keep my eye out for them next month. Four on Friday would actually work better for me than a Two on Tuesday, ironically. Enjoy your reading. I know you will.

  4. I thought that was strange about Firefox, too. I sort of hate that the TwoForTuesday is the day after my regular blog day, but I’m not sure I could come up with four of anything for a Four on Friday. Lol! If you’ll come up with the prompts, though, I’ll give it a try. (Please don’t take that as a dare.)

I was wondering why I wasn’t seeing your posts this month 🙂 these look like two great choices and I’ve seen you mention the first one before, I’ll definitely look out for that one when I go to the library after exams

  11. Yeah, I see the link at the end but I don’t get notified on my page. I have my final exams towards the end of this month and then I’ll have a couple of weeks break until the summer term starts. 🙂

  14. Thanks for the tip. I compose my blog posts in a Word doc so I’ll have them all handy in one big file. Then I cut and paste into WordPress. I see where I’m getting it wrong. I need to highlight from your site and then paste it in using the paperclip/add link option is. I guess when I paste the URL in from my Word doc, it’s not being picked up as a real link. I can’t believe I’ve been doing this wrong forever! Thanks for clarifying the process for this old person. LOL! Glad exams went well. Enjoy your break before summer school!
