Tomorrow is Flag Day in the US

There will be a parade in Washington, DC tomorrow to supposedly mark the 250th anniversary of the creation of the United States Army. June 14th is, coincidentally, Flag Day in the US.

The United States flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing, according to the official Flag Code.

The US flag is never to touch the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.

The US flag cannot be thrown in the trash when it becomes damaged or is updated with an additional star when a new state is added to the union. It must be disposed of in a flag retirement ceremony.

Those flag retirement ceremonies are conducted by organizations such as the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). In those solemn ceremonies, the flag is burned.

Setting fire to a US flag other than in on officially-sanctioned retirement ceremony is considered desecration.

Flying the US flag upside-down is a distress signal.

President Woodrow Wilson declared June 14 as Flag Day in 1916. Although not an official holiday on which banks and government offices close, since 1916 it has been a day set apart for us to stop and think about our flag and the sacrifice and freedoms it represents.

But then came Donald Trump

Donald Trump was born on June 14, 1946, and therein lies a problem.

Trump wanted a big military parade in Washington, DC during his first term in office, but he had rational military advisors then who told him (1) that’s not what we do in America and (2) the city streets in Washington, DC were not constructed to withstand the weight of army tanks. The military advisors in place then were able to shut down the idea.

But fast forward to 2025. All the military brass in a position to or with the courage to say “No” to President Trump are gone. Therefore, there will be a military parade with tanks on the city streets in Washington, DC tomorrow.

This parade is estimated to cost the American taxpayers $45 million. According to The Huff Post online, it is estimated that $16 million of that is what the taxpayers in the District of Columbia will be on the hook for in street repairs. (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/road-repairs-cost-trump-army-parade_n_683d7252e4b095a13840e070)

Is Trump concerned about that? Of course not! In fact, The Huff Post on June 2, 2025, quoted him as saying that $16 million is “peanuts compared to the value of doing it.”

US Army tanks from Fort Cavazos in Texas were transported to the nation’s capital just for this event. That is 1,500 miles. Soldiers need practice in transporting tanks, but 1,500 miles just for a parade seems excessive.

One-inch-thick steel plates have been placed at strategic places on the streets in Washington, DC and the tanks have been outfitted with new track pads to minimize street damage.

Members of the US Army Golden Knights parachute team are scheduled to drop in to hand a US flag to Trump.

What a spectacle it will be all while the US Congress, at the instruction of President Trump, cannot find the money to fund the National Park Service or USAID or medical research or the Corporation for Public Broadcasting or Medicaid or the National Weather Service or….

It is beside the point that democracies don’t have military parades in their capital cities to show their military might. That’s what the Adolph Hitlers, the Vladimir Putins, the Kim Jong Uns, and the Xi Jinpings of the world do.

But Donald Trump was jealous of them and their grand parades.

So Donald Trump will have a military parade on his birthday, and the US taxpayers be damned.

Until my next blog post

I hope all the American taxpayers who are working two jobs just to make ends meet have a nice Flag Day.

Tomorrow is also “No Kings Day” in the United States. We thought we made it clear in 1776 that we didn’t want a king. Someone will be reminded of that in 1,800 scheduled protests tomorrow.

  1. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow for the parade. Soldiers will get wet, overhead planes will not be seen. Perhaps the Golden Knights will not be able to jump. Flights from National will still be halted for 3 hours

A few years ago, 45 was the only world leader to not visit a US cemetery in France because they were losers and allegedly he didn’t want to get his orange DA coiffure to get wet.

Bet 47 will brave the rain since it is all about Him! Don’t TACOs fold into a soggy mess when they get wet?

  2. Here in Europe, as a consequence of the lunacy of this parade spectacle, he is being referred to Kim Jung Trump! He is certainly a scholar of dictators throughout history, like Stalin, Mao, Castro etcetera…

  3. I think the Europeans have it right about Trump. I’m afraid too many Americans are either too ignorant of world history or too drunk on the Trump Kool-Aid to understand what the Trump Administration is doing to our country. We have been lulled into thinking fascism could not happen here.

  4. I heard the weather might cancel or postpone the parade. (Come on, God, You can do this!) Wet TACOs are disgusting. And, yes, what Trump did not do and what he said in France should have been a deal breaker. There have been so many instances that would have been a deal breaker for any other president or even presidential candidate! That list would fill a book.

  5. At least he is changing his mind about the seizure of illegals when it affect on farmers (who supposedly support the Orange One) and hotels. Makes me wonder how many undocumented workers work at his winery/cidery, golf courses, hotels, etc.

  6. Exactly, Pat! Did he not know how many undocumented workers his companies hired and underpaid? Does he know where food comes from? Perhaps he thinks it just comes from the grocery store — that term he recently invented! No, Donnie, those burgers and fries you eat everyday were grown on a farm and picked, processed, and cooked by people living in conditions you cannot even imagine or worry yourself about. I will hate it for the people living in the DC area, but I hope it pours down rain with lots of lightning ALL DAY tomorrow! We’ve had 3.5 inches of rain in the last 24 hours here and it’s thundering again. If that’s what is moving north, y’all are in for a fun day tomorrow. Part of Charlotte got 4.5 inches of rain in less than two hours late yesterday afternoon.

  7. Charlottesville is about 2 hours south of DC. No rain yet, and they are calling for it between 4-6. So we will see. There is a stronger chance that Al Gore invented the Internet than the Donald invented the grocery store. What a Bozo Taco.

  8. It’s definitely a false sense of security Janet. If people do not let the government know that the government is of the people and for the people, not for the president, then terrible things can happen. I trust in God, knowing that he is in charge and that the worst can be avoided.

  9. God is in charge of the weather, and it sounds like Trump’s parade might be rained out. The White House says it will go on regardless, but the Generals are saying “not if there’s lightning!”

  10. Trump saved enough money, in his mind, by firing all those people so he can justify spending the money on the parade. Look how much money the government lost in taxes from all the fired people, makes no sense!

  11. It absolutely makes no sense, Diane. The “big, beautiful bill” increases the national debt. All those dedicated government employees were fired just on a whim by the 19-year-old computer geeks who worked for Musk. This is a tragedy on so many levels. We don’t even know yet all the things we have lost in this country.

  12. I watched bits and pieces of Trump’s parade, primarily on CNN. I tried watching it on a link from USA Today via You Tube, but it was of very poor quality, both in video and sound, and poor narration.

Trump has wanted his own parade since he watched a military parade in Paris with the French president, during Trump’s first term.

Trump has talked about having his own parade that would “top” the parade in Paris. He certainly had a much longer in time parade than the Paris parade. However, there was no comparison to the precision exhibited by the French. The British parades are so very precise also. Our soldiers were not that precise in yesterday’s parade. You could see the soldiers’ heads bobbing up and down, as they were marching out-of-step.

But I am proud of our US Army soldiers, having served in the US Army from 1952 to 1957.

But this parade was just for Trump’s ego appetite. As you said we spent $45 million to satisfy that ego!

  13. Jim, I chose not to watch Trump’s parade, but the video clips and photographs I’ve seen were just sad. Like you, I noticed soldiers marching out-of-step. None of them looked precise or crisp. I wondered about the ones peeking out of tanks who were waving and applauding. The parts I saw were disappointing. It appears that it was poorly attended, and the Trumps and other captive spectators couldn’t have look more bored. Thank you for your service in the US Army. I have two relatives proudly serving in the US Army today. I will not ask them what they think of the parade or about Trump in general. I was puzzled by the photo I saw of the poor soldiers who had to dress as if they were in the Continental Army. Who in their right mind in charge of costuming thinks the Continental Army soldiers wore white wigs? I just generally feel sorry for current members of the US military who love America and see Trump for the pathetic leader he is. I feel sorry for the US Marines deployed to Los Angeles. I am embarrassed that some soldiers in Trump’s audience at Fort Bragg last week cheered him. I am equally embarrassed for the ones who booed him. Neither reaction was appropriate, so I have to wonder about the quality of the instruction and command there. It was equally inappropriate for Trump to make a political speech at an Army base. It seems that “anything goes” now. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the parade. I’m glad it is over, and I hope there won’t be another one for Trump.

  14. Hello Janet, I really appreciate your posts. I hope you get this response. For some reason each time I comment I am asked to log in even though I am logged in. After logging in I still do not see my comments. Perhaps using JetPack will help. I am slowly trying to transition from WordPress to JetPack. Perhaps this is the reason for my difficulties.

  15. Hi Tangie. I’m sorry you’re having trouble leaving a comment. I got both of yours that you left today. Occasionally, I find WordPress asking me to sign in when I’m already signed in. I haven’t taken the time to look into what is causing it. I appreciate all your comments.

  16. Thank you, Tangie. I continue to wish we weren’t in such a position in our country that I feel like I need to keep blogging about politics. Things only seem to get worse each week.
