Never forget.

Never forget those who died in that terrorist attack.

Never forget the first responders who gave their lives on that day and over the 24 years since that day because of the service they rendered.

Ncver forget that feeling of unity Americans felt after the attack.

Do what you can to bring that feeling of unity back.

Never forget the countries that came to our aid and wept by our sides after the attack.

Do what you can to regain that level of respect we had from other countries.

  1. I was working in DC the day that the Pentagon was hit. It was eerie. The next day was a typical government cluster since we got no guidance on whether to stay home or return to work. (I went back to work. We spent hours waiting to get through the gate since they were thoroughly searching each car, including the undercarriage before it was allowed on post.) Some of us had an impromptu picnic on the banks of the Potomac on September 11 because we felt that the commute was going to be wretched since outbound traffic was competing with inbound traffic and the express lanes were still set for inbound traffic. What struck me the most about that day was watching the American flag flying over the Navy Annex aka Federal Office Building #2, up the hill with Arlington Cemetery spread out behind it. I knew America was still standing. What I would pay to have that same sense of security of knowing what America was supposed to stand for. My husband was in Crystal City which is just of the Pentagon. His boss had a house nearby. He invited them to his house, while he pulled on his running shoes and jogged the couple of miles back to Pentagon to see if he could be of assistance. He and my husband were both retired naval officers.

  2. Wow, Pat! What a story. I hope you have written this and more of your memories from 9-11 and the days, weeks, and months that followed somewhere permanent. You were there and your memories need to be recorded. Someday, there will be people who will say it never happened. Thank you for sharing all that. I can’t imagine. My memory is that I slept late that morning. We’d had a special celebration of our church’s 250th anniversary that weekend that my sister and I were heavily involved in. Our brother and his wife had come up from Georgia for it and were staying with us. Marie woke me up with the words, “The World Trade Center is on fire!” I jumped out of bed. My brother and I stood in front of the TV watching it burn, when suddenly, the second tower was hit. My brother and I turned to each other. I said, “This is no accident.” I was physically ill and a nervous wreck for the rest of the day as there were more planes and more crashes and no one knew what was going to happen next. It was on that day that I realized why my parents always stopped on December 7 to remember Pearl Harbor and tell us again how they came home from church that day and heard about that attack on the radio. It remains to be seen what comes out of the Charlie Kirk assassination, but it will be a surprise if it in any way brings our country together. It seems now that every political assassination since the world began is the fault of the “left-wing lunatic Democrats” who are alive today. I don’t remember ever killing anyone or wishing anyone harm, but it seems I fall into that bucket or horrible people now who are to blame for all of society’s problems. Thank you again for sharing your painful and vivid recollections of September 11, 2001.

  3. You’re welcome. It pales in comparison to yours, but I will never forget standing in the middle of the family room watching it unfold. It’s the same place I stood in horror again on January 6, 2021.

  4. By then we had moved and I watched it on television. I was appalled then and even more appalled in the next two weeks how Republicans reversed their Jan 6 televised statements and crawled to kiss Trump’s ring or somewhere more distasteful.
